Completed October 17-21
  • Continued work on new traffic controller next to Foothill Expressway.                                                                                                                       
  • Completed water line installation, added the sub-base within and completed the wooden concrete forms for the new First Street fountain.
  • Completed construction of new 6” lateral sanitary sewer line on First Street (near State St)
  • Continued work on the monolith on the south-west corner of the First & Main intersection
  • Completed 70% of the grading for the First Street roadbed
  • Created the wooden forms for the new mid-block crosswalk on First Street
  • Completed the curb & gutter form on the west side of First Street
  • Began hand excavating the gas lines at the entrance of Central Plaza in preparation for connecting the new First Street gas line
  • Began prepping the curb and sidewalk on State St at First St for removal
  • Completed 60% of the new irrigation lines on First Street
Other Downtown News
  • The 48th Annual Halloween Window Painting Contest for local students is underway downtown. Wonderful creativity is on display!
  • 70% of concrete and granite cleaning and sealing has been completed in the downtown triangle and will continue next week.  No streets will be closed. There will be areas on the sidewalks and benches temporary roped off for the work.
  • Plans for the new Safeway store on First Street was approved by the  Planning Commission’s Architecture & Site Review Committee on Oct 19
Scheduled for New Week
  • Pour concrete for new fountain
  • Demolish the State St curb & gutter adjacent to the project
  • Pour the curb and gutter concrete on the west side of First Street
  • Finish grading the base rock for the new First Street roadbed
  • Pour the concrete for the new mid-block crosswalk on First Street
  • Continue work on new traffic signal control box
  • Continue work on signal lights and signal controller box
  • Continue landscaping area preparation
  • Continue digging new drainage sections on First Street near State Street

Completed October 10 - 14
  • Re-marked all underground utilities beneath the new roadbed and sidewalk areas in preparation for final grading and paving on First Street.
  • Continued work on new traffic controller next to Foothill Expressway                                                                                                              
  • Completed rebar foundation for the First Street fountain
  • Began construction of new 6” lateral sanitary sewer line on First Street (near State St)
  • Poured the concrete foundation for the new monolith on the corner of First & Main
  • Dug the new trellis foundations
  • Created the plywood forms in preparation for the fountain concrete pour
  • Major deliveries of traffic signals, pavers and other project components have begun arriving to the staging yard.
  • The re-design for the First Street sidewalk between State & the Central Parking Plaza by Passerelle Investments, approved by the City Council on Aug 3, was completed
Traffic Update
  • San Antonio Road traffic lanes will be striped next week over two days. There will be no lane closures; traffic will be routed around the painting trucks as they drive down the road.
Other Downtown News
  • The concrete and granite will be cleaned and sealed through next week in the downtown triangle. No streets will be closed. There will be areas on the sidewalks and benches temporary roped off for the work.

Update #3: 1-5 August 2011

Completed this week:
• 90% of the curbs & gutters within the project area have been removed
• 100% of the old electrical conduit along First Street has been removed
• Installed temporary street lights along First Street and the start of State Street (these will be removed when the new street lights are installed)
• The City Council approved a design change that saves two mature London Plane trees  in front of Skip’s Pizza on First Street
• City Council also approved design changes to the sidewalk paving and a new benchwall along First Street near State Street
• Installed new gas line along First Street using new earthquake-safe flexible gas piping
• Removed the unexpected concrete slap in the center of the First & Main intersection
• Installed fabric blocks on top of all storm drain catch-basins to prevent any construction debris getting into the drain and ultimately the creek
• Hauled 100% of all concrete & asphalt debris demolished away for recycling
• Prepared the curb & gutter areas for placing the concrete molds next week

Scheduled for the week of August 8-12
• Create concrete molds (formwork) for new curb and gutter installation
• Pour new concrete for curbs & gutters adjacent to First & Main intersection area
• Fill-in & compact all gas trenches (backfill)
• Dig new sewer trench
• Remove trees as determined by revised plan
• Install straw waddles and fencing around remaining trees to protect them during construction
• Contractor will begin working on Saturdays for the next few weeks

Traffic Update
• One way traffic on First Street between State & Plaza North 7:00 am to 5:00 pm while trenching.

Unexpected Finds - Surprises
• The concrete cap on top of the new water line may need to be moved deeper underground to prevent interfering with the new road bed. The City Engineer will meet with Cal Water engineers to determine next step

Outreach Updates
• New Apricot Annie parking signs were installed to highlight free parking areas
• Two new signs highlighting access to the Chevron gas station installed
• Revised directional signs for drivers were installed on San Antonio Rd, El Monte Ave, Foothill Expressway
• More permanent Downtown directional signs installed
• Sidewalk A-frames directing walkers to businesses along First Street installed
