First Street Streetscape Project - Phase 1B

The City of Los Altos has begun the final phase of construction improving First Street in Downtown Los Altos. Construction on the First Street Streetscape Project Phase 1B began on April 29, 2013. The project boundaries are located on First Street between State Street and Shasta Street. The goal of this project is to update infrastructure while improving public access, pedestrian safety and invigorating the downtown area. This Project will improve a number of key areas along this stretch of First Street including:
  • Widening of sidewalks to improve pedestrian access and flow
  • Street corner widening and crosswalk upgrades to improve pedestrian safety
  • Decorative street lighting and additional street trees to improve landscaping
  • New storm drains, inlets and rain gardens to accommodate storm water runoff
  • New subsurface irrigation systems to increase water use efficiency and connect isolated landscape areas

Construction Schedule
Construction will begin in early May on the section of First Street between Shasta and Parking Plaza 7 (aka Plaza North). The City plans to have this portion of the project complete prior to the Art and Wine Festival in July 2013. Following the festival, work will commence on the State Street and First Street intersection. During this period, the block of State Street between First and Second Streets will be closed for up to six-weeks, reopening by Labor Day weekend. The City is currently collaborating with a number of community groups to develop temporary programming on the closed block of State Street to entice visitors to this area during construction.

Temporary Construction Impacts on Traffic and Parking
During construction on First Street, all street parking will be restricted and through-circulation in Plaza 7 will be periodically restricted due to work along the driveways on First Street. In addition, a portion of Plaza 7 will be used to store construction materials and will result in a temporary loss of parking spaces. Provisions will be made to keep as much of the Plaza available for parking as possible and to allow for internal circulation.
